{"id":13308,"date":"2021-07-05T08:00:29","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nucamprv.com\/?p=13308"},"modified":"2021-06-01T14:02:30","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T19:02:30","slug":"denali-national-park-preserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nucamprv.com\/blog\/denali-national-park-preserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Take a Trip to the Denali National Park and Preserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine more than six million acres of wildland, bisected by a single road\u2014the 92-mile-long Denali Park Road\u2014that takes visitors through low valleys, high mountain passes, and beautiful landscapes. That is what you\u2019ll find in Denali National Park and Preserve, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/learn\/nature\/international-biosphere-region.htm\">Biosphere Reserve<\/a> and home to grizzly and black bears, wolves, caribou and moose as well as golden and bald eagles, and many other forms of wildlife including Dall sheep\u2014the protection of which was the main reason Congress created the park in 1917. And of course, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/kennels.htm\">sled dogs<\/a>, although during the pandemic the kennels are closed to visitors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/directions.htm\">Getting to Denali<\/a> is comparatively easy. Alaska State Route 3 (also called the George Parks Highway) connects Denali with Anchorage (five miles south), and Fairbanks (two miles north). There is no entrance gate, meaning you can visit any time of the day or night. Denali Park Road is open only during the summer for public (non-commercial) vehicles. The rest of the road is limited to human-powered locomotion (biking, hiking, etc.). Keep in mind that only the first 15 miles of Denali Park Road are paved.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is to take any one of the following bus tours: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/shuttles.htm\">non-narrated transit buses<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/bus-tours.htm\">narrated tour buses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/courtesy-shuttle-buses.htm\">free buses<\/a> operated by the park\u2019s commercial partner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reservedenali.com\/\">Doyon\/Aramark Joint Venture<\/a>. If you visit outside that timeframe, be prepared for unexpected weather including snow, which can lead to road closures. January temps that can drop to -40 degrees. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/weather.htm\">Go here<\/a> for more details about Denali weather and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/shoulder-season.htm\">here<\/a> for visiting in spring or fall.)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Visitor Centers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are three primary visitor centers in Denali: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/the-denali-visitor-center.htm\">Denali Visitor Center<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/the-eielson-visitor-center.htm\">Eielson Visitor Center<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/wildernessaccesscenter.htm\">Denali Bus Depot<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/walter-haper-trs.htm\">Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station<\/a> (open year-round) serves as the center of mountaineering operations, with rangers providing an orientation to the mountain and climbing permits as well as some visitor services. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rlc\/murie\/index.htm\">Murie Science and Learning Center<\/a> also acts as the winter visitor center and is open nearly every day of the year. Check the website for information on closures and seasonal exceptions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Entrance Fees<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Denali charges an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/fees.htm\">entrance fee<\/a> year-round, with some activities, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/visiting-denali.htm\">summer bus trips<\/a> or staying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campgrounds.htm\">park campgrounds<\/a>, at additional cost.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Campgrounds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Denali has three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campgrounds.htm\">RV and\/or tent campgrounds<\/a> (232 total sites) and three tent-only campgrounds (42 sites): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-wonder.htm\">Wonder Lake<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-igloo.htm#6\/63.421\/-148.491\">Igloo Creek<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-sanctuary.htm#6\/63.421\/-148.491\">Sanctuary River<\/a>. (Photo courtesy of NPS)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>roadsides.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/fees.htm\">Campground fees<\/a> range from $12 to $27 per night and are free in winter (roughly late September to early May each year). Senior Pass and Access Pass holders receive 50% off nightly camping fees. Check the website for additional campground information including closures.<\/p>\n<p>RV and other vehicle camping are available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-riley.htm\">Riley Creek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-savage.htm\">Savage River<\/a>,\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-tek.htm\">Teklanika River<\/a>, although vehicles over 40-feet long can\u2019t be accommodated. There are no electrical or water hookups for RVs, but all the campgrounds have toilets (some flush, some vault-style), and all but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-igloo.htm#6\/63.421\/-148.491\">Igloo Creek<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/campground-sanctuary.htm#6\/63.421\/-148.491\">Sanctuary River<\/a> have potable water. There are also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denalichamber.com\/\">campgrounds outside of the park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>COVID-19 Response<\/h3>\n<p>Before visiting Denali National Park and Preserve, please check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/planyourvisit\/conditions.htm\">park website<\/a> for updates. National Parks are managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/index.htm\">National Park Service (NPS)<\/a> park rangers under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Interior<\/a>. Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local public health authorities, the National Park Service is increasing access and services in a phased approach across all units of the National Park System. Visitors must wear face masks in federal buildings, including visitor centers, historic structures, and museums. Visitors are required to wear masks outdoors when physical distance cannot be maintained on NPS-managed lands.
