No reservations required for entry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Canyon of The Gunnison<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">102 Elk Creek, Gunnison, CO 81230 Phone: 970-641-2337 x205<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/index.htm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheer walls of schist and gneiss cutting as deep as 2,700 feet into the earth\u2019s crust. A 48-mile stretch that is as narrow as 40 feet in some places and a river that drops an average of 43 feet per mile\u2014 one of the steepest mountain descents in North America, according to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Black_Canyon_of_the_Gunnison_National_Park\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New World Encyclopedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These three dimensions hardly due justice to Colorado\u2019s Black Canyon of The Gunnison, 14 miles of which is part of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Canyon National Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 47-square mile park became part of the National Park Service in 1999, making it the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Black_Canyon_of_the_Gunnison_National_Park\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55th U.S. National Park and the third smallest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But don\u2019t let the diminutive size deter you from adding it to your list. Instead, become one of the many who couldn\u2019t resist this unique natural attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ute Indians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who lived in the area since written history began knew of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, they only inhabited the rim, never the gorge itself. Several expeditions sought to explore the area, including the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/explorer_gunnison.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1853 Gunnison Expedition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led by Captain John W. Gunnison, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/explorer_bryant.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1883 Bryant Expedition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led by Byron Bryant, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/explorer_pelton.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1900 Pelton Expedition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led by John Pelton, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/torrfellexp.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1901 Torrence &amp; Fellows Expedition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by Abraham Lincoln Fellows and Will Torrence, and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/kolbexpedition.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1916 Kolb Expedition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led by Ellsworth Kolb. But the canyon\u2019s rugged and demanding environment proved an insurmountable impediment to the explorers. And yet the canyon\u2019s natural majesty captivated those who sought to conquer it, and inspired\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/learn\/historyculture\/explorer_bryant.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transitman Harvey Wright<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Bryant Expedition to describe it as \u201cview after view of the most wonderful, the most thrilling of rock exposures, one vanishing from view only to be replaced by another still more imposing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s visitors will be equally overwhelmed by this natural wonder that consists of some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. From\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/hikingtrails.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trails to hike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/fishing.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">streams and rivers ideal for fishing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the Gunnison River within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is designated as Gold Medal Water &amp; Wild Trout Water),\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/wildlifewatching.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildlife to watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/drives.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scenic drives to explore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and of course,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/rockclimbing.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rock walls to climb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Black Canyon is a treasure chest of activities. Even\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/winteractivities.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter weather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t an obstacle. The South Rim Drive, left unplowed during winter months, becomes a ski trail, while the upper part of the Oak Flat Loop and Rim Rock Trail turns into a snowshoeing location.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Camping<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Canyon has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/camping.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three campgrounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/camp_east_portal.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">East Portal Campground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a small tent-only site at the bottom of the canyon that\u2019s closed in the winter) and two on the canyon\u2019s rim: the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/camp_northrim.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Rim Campground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/camp_southrim.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Rim Campground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with only the last offering electrical hook-ups. Fees for each campground vary, with discounted camping rates for valid Senior or Access passes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hikers and kayakers may also camp in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness Area after obtaining a Wilderness Use Permit (restrictions apply), while\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/winteractivities.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter backcountry camping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is permitted along the closed South Rim Drive beyond Pulpit Rock Overlook, providing all wilderness regulations are followed and a free wilderness use permit is secured.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Visitor Centers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/visitorcenters.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Rim Visitor Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, seven miles north on Colorado Highway 347 from the intersection with U.S. Highway 50, is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Hours range from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from October to April, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from April to May, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from May to September, and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from September to October. (Check the site or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/contacts.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact the Visitor Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for specific dates.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The North Rim Ranger Station is open intermittently during the summer, with a self-pay station available for the park entrance fee. A self-registration board is available for wilderness permits if the ranger station is closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hours and Fees<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entrance fees are $25 for a 7-Day Vehicle Pass, $20 for a 7-Day Motorcycle Pass, $15 for a 7-Day Individual Pass (pedestrian or bicycle), and $45 for a Black Canyon Annual Pass. Passes can be purchased at the entrance station with digital passes also available at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/sitepass\/74332\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recreation.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The park also has five entrance fee-free days during the year: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, First Day of National Park Week, the National Park Service Birthday, National Public Lands Day, and Veterans Day.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/fees.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the site for exact dates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with more fee information available\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/fees.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Accessibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the South Rim and North Rim have\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/accessibility.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facilities that are accessible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to those with mobility impairments. At the South Rim, accessible facilities include restrooms, two accessible camping sites, and restrooms at the South Rim Campground, Tomichi Point Overlook, Chasm View Overlook, and Sunset View Overlook. North Rim accessible facilities include the restroom at North Rim Ranger Station and Balanced Rock Overlook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Black Canyon Movie shown at the South Rim Visitor Center meets Section 504 standards for audiences with hearing and visual impairments, with headphones for audio descriptions are available upon request.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Weather<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Black Canyon has a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/basicinfo.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four-season climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Summer daytime temperatures range between 55F to 90F, with afternoon thunderstorms being common during the summer. Winter daytime temperatures range between 15F to 40F, with afternoon snow accumulation varying greatly from year to year. Keep in mind that both the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frommers.com\/destinations\/black-canyon-of-the-gunnison-national-park\/planning-a-trip\/when-to-go\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temperature and weather conditions can vary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depending on whether you\u2019re on the canyon rim or the canyon floor. The closer you get to the bottom of the canyon, the hotter it will become.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pets<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/planyourvisit\/pets2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on leash are allowed on roads, in campgrounds, to the overlooks, and on specific trails (Cedar Point Nature Trail, North Rim Chasm View Nature Trail, and Rim Rock Trail), they are not permitted on any other hiking trails, cross country ski trails, or inner canyon wilderness, on ranger-led geology walks, or at evening programs in the campground amphitheater.
