Before you do, there are certain tasks you need to undertake to make sure your RV is in tip-top shape when you\u2019re ready to take it out on the road again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post covers general tips for preparing your RV\u2019s water system and holding tanks. Then read\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nucamprv.com\/blog\/preparing-camper-long-term-storage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparing Your Camper for Long-Term Storage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for more advice. (As always, check your owner\u2019s manual for specific instructions for your RV.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NOTE: Draining the water system alone will not provide adequate cold weather protection. If the camper is to be unheated during freezing temperatures, consult your dealer for the best winterizing procedure for your climate. Your dealer can supply you with one of the special non-toxic types of antifreeze that are safe and approved for use in RV water systems. (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rvlife.com\/techtipsrv-antifreeze-not-all-the-same\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech Tips: RV Antifreeze: Not All the Same<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides a good explanation of the two types of RV antifreeze available.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Holding Tanks<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completely empty the freshwater as well as the black and gray holding tanks, then thoroughly deep clean the black tank.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backwash your system, either using the built-in backwash unit or a wand specifically for RV tank pressure cleaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, treat your tank with a biologically friendly enzyme cleaner. (Check Axle Addict\u2019s detailed tips for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/axleaddict.com\/rvs\/How-to-Care-for-your-RV-Fresh-Water-Tank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freshwater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/axleaddict.com\/rvs\/How-to-Care-for-RV-Black-Water-Holding-Tanks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sewer tanks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Water Heater\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drain your water tank by opening the drain plug or valve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reserveamerica.com\/outdoors\/how-to-winterize-an-rv.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReserveAmerica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends flushing out any sediment in the tank using a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Camco-Rinser-Cleanses-Sediment-Collects-11691\/dp\/B002XL2IBS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water heater tank rinsing wand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then leaving the drain plug open until spring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your water heater uses anode rods\u2014used to extend the life of your water heater by attracting corrosive elements\u2014remove it until you\u2019re ready to take your RV on the road again, according to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glrv.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-winterize-your-rv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Life RV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the rods are a little on the skinny side, you may need to replace them. This\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=83m67RRb3no\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides step-by-step instructions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Water Pipes<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove any inline water filters, then drain all the pipes by flushing the toilet and opening all the hot and cold water faucets. Then cap all drains and close all faucets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before adding RV\/Marine antifreeze to your system, make sure to bypass the water heater. Check the owner\u2019s manual for how to do it and where the valves are located. Then pump the RV antifreeze throughout the water system, opening faucets one by one and also flushing the toilet to get it to appear in the bowl.
